Making Prayer a Part of Our Ministry DNA

What if Prayer became a part of our Ministry DNA!  I believe with all my heart that it would be a game changer and would revolutionize youth ministry and us as well.  As my friend Greg Stier said to me at a recent prayer gathering of national and international youth leaders “prayer needs to be the engine that drives the train of Evangelism (ministry)”.  Or put another way it can’t simply be an add on to our ministry; it is a vital component of any ministry that hopes to have kingdom value!  Without this needed engine our efforts are futile and our ministry isn’t His but rather it is our human effort trying to fix a problem that requires divine intervention.  Our Lord Himself while on this earth made prayer His priority so why shouldn’t we.  He knew that drawing near to the Father was essential in doing the will of the Father.

Let’s call our students to become true prayer warriors who intercede on behalf of their peers! Certainly we need to teach them techniques and help them develop programs but it is time for us, as youth leaders, to take a stand and model consistent prayer in all that we do.  A generation of students is depending on us to equip and empower them to become His instruments of grace and hope in a lost a dying world.  If we pray for them and more importantly with them then we have done our part in fueling this all important engine.

I believe that if every youth leader commits to making prayer a personal priority we will see a shift in our ministries and in the youth culture. Will you covenant with our Lord to make your life a prayer driven one?  Let’s move beyond “prayer times’ and move into prayer lifestyles where prayer is our first default answer to every problem, situation, or decision. Then as we model this commitment in our families and in our ministries I believe we will see an outpouring of His Spirit unlike any we have seen in generations!  Lord may our cry always be the cry of Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles 20:12 “We do not know what to do, but we look to you”
