1. Jehovah M’Kaddesh: “The LORD who Sanctifies”

  • Pronounced: juh-HO-vah mek-KAH-dish”

Sanctify defined: Makes holy

  • Can also mean dedicate, consecrate, set apart
  • Used over 700 times in the Bible

“Consecrate yourselves and be holy…follow my decrees…I am the Lord who makes you holy.”           (Lev. 20:7-8)

Historical) the word sanctify was applied to: the city of Jerusalem, the altar, the Tabernacle, the Temple, the Holy Land, the first born, the priesthood, the people of God

Impact of “holiness”:   (from a Scottish writer)

  • Power without holiness would degenerate into cruelty
  • Justice without holiness would degenerate into revenge
  • Goodness without holiness would be passionate and intemperate fondness doing mischief rather than accomplishing good.

2. God is holy.  Therefore:

  • We are to be holy

God’s part: “Jesus suffered...to make people holy through His own blood.”                (Heb. 13:12)

  • Make yourself holy

Our part: “Prepare your minds for action, be self-controlled… do not conform to evil desires…so be holy in all you do.”              (1 Pet. 1:13-16, Lev. 11:44-45)

  • We have a higher standard, being set apart
  • We will be different, think different, act different than others

3. Realize the War within you

Live by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.  For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit…They are in conflict (at war) with each other, so that you do not do what you want.”(Gal. 5:16-17)

The deeds of the flesh: impure thoughts, complaints, envy, anger, feeling everyone else is wrong    (Gal. 5:19-21, LIV)

  • The world’s unholiness will constantly pull on us
